Graham repeats an amusing letter that appeared forst in The Independent

Sir,

The letter about yokels talking in letters reminded me of a colleague of my father who was stationed with the Royal Navy in Malta during the war. He had given himself the title of "Engineering Inspectorate Executive Information Officer."

When my father accused him of being rather pretentious, he agreed. He did point out, however, the immense pleasure he got, in those troubled times, of answering the telephone with "E.I.E.I.O
